Vanderbilt University History.

Founded in 1873 by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University is a private liberal arts and sciences college that also offers several top professional schools. History of Tennessee State University.

Founded in 1912 as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School for Negroes, Tennessee State University originally offered an agriculture-based education for black men. The school opened with just 247 students, but was elevated to the status of four-year teachers' college in 1922, finally offering students a bachelor's degree program. In 1927, the school’s name was changed to the Agricultural and Industrial State College, and it continued to grow, offering graduate programs beginning in 1941. The school awarded its first master's degree in 1944, and became the University of Tennessee in 1971.
