Vanderbilt University History.

Founded in 1873 by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University is a private liberal arts and sciences college that also offers several top professional schools. Unlike most colleges of its time, Vanderbilt never prohibited women from attending, and, beginning in 1875, each graduating class at Vanderbilt included at least one woman. As the university grew, it became well known for its research facilities and distinguished medical center, growing to become one of the top 20 universities in the US today.

About Tennessee State University.

Tennessee State University is a nationally recognized university offering 45 bachelor's degree and 24 master's degrees programs on its 500-acre main campus. The university also offers seven doctoral degrees in areas such as biological sciences, psychology, curriculum and instruction, and computer information systems engineering, among others. The school also offers a rich athletics program with several teams competing at the NCAA division 1 level.

History of Tennessee State University.

Founded in 1912 as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School for Negroes, Tennessee State University originally offered an agriculture-based education for black men. The school opened with just 247 students, but was elevated to the status of four-year teachers' college in 1922, finally offering students a bachelor's degree program. In 1927, the school’s name was changed to the Agricultural and Industrial State College, and it continued to grow, offering graduate programs beginning in 1941. The school awarded its first master's degree in 1944, and became the University of Tennessee in 1971.
